Chan Chan was the imperial city of the Chimu people of northern Peru until 1740. The city contained ten walled adobe compounds, each a city unto itseslf. Buildings in Chan Chan were often decorated with geometrically patterned stylized animals, birds and mythic figures in bas relief and molded in clay plaster.
